Janet logged on in good time. 9am was still early for her on a Sunday,
but with no Carl there didn’t seem any reason to stay in bed at
weekends any more. She still missed him, but it was all in the past.
She was moving on.
She made coffee, and hugging the mug she clicked into Skype. David said
he’d call her at nine am her time – but she could see he
wasn’t even logged on yet. She looked at her e-mails to see if
there was something from him – no new ones amongst the endless
e-mails they’d swapped in the last few weeks.
She clicked on the last one – it was quite a trail, talking about
old times and they’d even discussed David coming to see her next
Summer (English winter) and where she’d take him. David had
always been great fun, and the thought crossed her mind for the
hundredth time – why did we
split up?
There was the e-mail telling him his Six Degrees quest had worked.
He’d seemed like a dog with two tails when she’d told him.
The ‘phone ringing brought her out of her reverie. Who the hell’s that at this time on
a Sunday?
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me, Dave.”
“I thought you were Skyping me, not a real ‘phone. Besides
I wanted to see your face.”
“Yeah, well, I may be able to arrange that, but I’m not
near my computer.”
“Oh, okay, where are you then?”
A pause. Oh Christ, he’s at his girlfriend’s house.
“I’m outside someone’s house.”
Yep, a woman.
“Look, if you’re at your girlfriend’s or something,
don’t worry. We can rearrange.”
“No, no – I’m not at my girlfriend’s. More an
ex girlfriend actually.”
A long pause …
“Actually, I’m outside your front door.”
It had been years since she moved that fast. She scrambled for her
keys. Fumbled them into the lock, and only when the door was half open
did she realise what she must look like. Dave looked worse. Twenty-four
hours in economy on a plane does it for anyone! She didn’t care.
